Playing The Arena Football Way

While the 2008 economic downturn has forced AFL officials to cancel its 2009 season, you can still play football the arena way.The Field- The field is 50 yards long and 85 feet wide with 8 yards end zone. - The sideline barriers are 4 feet high and made from high-density foam padding. - The goal post is 15 feet high and 9 feet wide. - The goal side rebound nets are 30 feet wide and 37 feet high and are made from tightly strung mesh. The Players- Each team should have 8 players in the field.- 20 players should be in active roster and 4 players in inactive roster. - Players are allowed to play both the defense and the offense either by choice or by replacing an injured player. Open substitution is applied. - 4 offensive players must be on the line of scrimmage. A receiver may move forward before the ball is snapped. - 3 defensive players must be down linemen (2 or more yards from the line of scrimmage). A linebacker may blitz. Movement of the Ball and Scoring- 4 downs are allowed to gain 10 yards for a first down.- Touchdown = 6 points- Conversion run or pass = 2 points- Drop kick conversion = 2 points- Conversion place kick = 1 point- Safety = 2 points- Failed conversion returned by defense = 2 points

The Rules- The game runs for 60 minutes and is divided into four 15-minute quarters. A 12- to 15-minute halftime break is observed.- The player is still considered inbound if he receives the ball with one foot inside the field (same as the NCAA rules). - The rebound net can be used to bounce the ball to the intended receiver. The ball is alive until it touches the playing surface. - In case of a tie at the end of the regulation time, there is a 15-minute overtime period. Each team has one possession to score. If the teams are still tied after they had possession, the next team to score wins. - Punting is illegal. Kickoff is from the goal line (the kicker may use a one-inch tee).- One a fourth down, the offence may go for a field goal, a touchdown or a first down. - An out-of-bounds ball from a kickoff will be placed either on the place where it went out of bounds or on the 20 yard line, whichever is more advantageous to the receiving team.
